The Chicago Fire are reportedly finalizing a deal to sign USMNT midfielder Kellyn Acosta as a free agent.

After going through the FC Dallas youth and making his debut for the senior squad in 2013, Acosta has spent his whole career in Major League Soccer. Acosta joined Los Angeles FC, where he became an MLS Cup winner in 2022 and also made it to the final last year. According to The Athletic, Acosta is now set to be snapped up by the Chicago Fire despite having been heavily linked with Sporting KC.

During this transfer window, Championship side Watford and Granada of La Liga both expressed interest in signing Acosta as a free agent; however, it's unclear if an official offer was ever made.

Acosta has played for the USMNT in 58 games, including two in Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 28-year-old is a strong contender to compete for the United States as a designated veteran player in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

WHAT NEXT FOR ACOSTA?

Chicago Fire will start their Major League Soccer campaign on February 24 against Philadelphia Union and will hope for an improved campaign. If Acosta joins the club before Monday, February 12, he could very well be involved in at least three friendlies to help him attain match sharpness.
